1993
Federal safety standard began
The U.S. standard applies to residential garage door operators manufactured on or after January 1, 1993 for sale in the United States.

Maximum reversal time in the obstruction test
For a vertically moving door, the standard requires the operator to begin reversing within two seconds after contacting the prescribed obstruction, except for the first foot of travel from fully open.

Required in a representative obstruction test
The regulation calls for 50 open-and-close cycles in a representative operating system when testing a vertically moving residential garage door operator for reversal performance.

Required endurance for a safety-circuit switch or relay
A mechanical switch or relay used in an entrapment-protection circuit must withstand 100,000 operating cycles under the required test conditions.

Severe eye injuries in one 15-year case series
A 2023 clinical case series described seven people treated from 2008 through 2023 after a garage door spring dislodged while they were attempting a repair. Final vision ranged from 20/125 to no light perception.

Patients developed retinal detachment in that series
In the same small, single-center series, five patients developed retinal detachment requiring additional surgery, and two did not recover any vision. The findings are not a national injury rate, but they show why spring work is not a homeowner repair.

Do the low-risk checks. Leave the high-tension work alone.
It is reasonable to keep the doorway clear, clean photo-eye lenses, notice a new noise, and test an opener only as its manufacturer instructs. Stop using the door if it is heavy, crooked, off track, or not reversing as expected.
Never loosen springs, lift cables, bottom brackets, or related hardware. A working opener does not prove the door is properly balanced, and repeated testing can add damage when a mechanical part has failed.
